When you learn lighting - your image quality will immediately improve!

This is an exciting two part workshop for those who either want to begin learning, or brush up on the fundamentals of photography lighting with a concentration on studio portrait lighting.

Using a combination of theory and practical exercises, each student will bring their camera to the class, set up and meter lights, and take pictures of professional models. There will be a variety of lighting setups that students can later recreate from diagrams and pictures.

The Three Critical Skills for creating professional looking images are:

Camera Technical Skills
Lighting Skills
Photoshop (formerly Darkroom) Skills

Our Philosophy:

We’re serious about learning! With our methods of comprehensive learning we do the proverbial “teaching you how to fish rather than giving you a fish”. When you understand how something works you can minimize the need for memorization and more importantly can adapt it to your own needs and preferences!

The principals and techniques you learn in our Lighting 101 workshops will apply universally to all photography lighting situations.

All of our workshops include valuable handouts informational tools (even a wallet card now), and our methods for controlling light. We have spent years of research and experimentation and have read a “library worth” of books. The reasoning for this is that every author seems to leave some point unexplained, explained poorly, or just shrouded in mystery. We have compiled all of what we have learned it into one comprehensive source for you!

Who else would use a kid’s swimming pool, a bucket, and a hose to explain flash and ambient exposure? But believe me…you will understand it better than anyone else after I explain it!
